A SYNOPSIS OF THE TALK “THE DECREE OF THE WATCHERS” PRESENTED TO THE DIOCSAN LADIES OF THE COUNCIL OF KNIGHTS DURING THEIR ANNUAL RETREAT AT GOSHEN ANGLICAN RETREAT CENTER, OWERRI, IMO STATE FROM SUNDAY 15TH-WEDNESDAY 18TH JANUARY, 2023.

Introductory Remarks: We are indeed, thankful to God for several things: gift of life, a new year, good health, innumerable blessings, deliverances from the enemy, and above all, the opportunity to gather together in this retreat. What a wonderful way to begin the year!

We remain indebted to the President of the women ministry (NneomaAba). Her visionary and exemplary leadership, her passion and commitment to God and the work of God, her spirituality and love for God are some of the outstanding virtues every woman should imbibe. Our prayers are always with you. Equally, we appreciate the Bishop for his approval of this retreat.

Thank you Noble Ladies for making yourselves available.

Our anchor text: Daniel 4:17- “This decision is by the decree of the watchers,And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men.” NKJV

The Decree of the Watchers

  • Decree is an authoritative and official order, decision or statement that has the force of law. It is usually issued by one who is in the place of power and authority- a ruler. Its origin is from the French word, decret and Latin word decretum meaning to decree, decide or pronounce a decision.
  • Watcher is simply one that watches. One who sits up or continues awake; particularly, one who attends upon others while they are sleeping during the night.
  • The term “watchers” in the bible is only found in the book of Daniel. It occurs in both singular and plural forms where reference is made to the holiness of the beings, See Dan, 4:17.
  • The term is first used to refer to Angels of God. The watchers used in Daniel 4:17 refer to the angelic beings that surround the throne of the Holy One; they carry out and execute the biddings of the Almighty.
  • God’s angels are worthy of our study.

  1. Their number is countless Heb.12:22
  2. They are of varying height and stature. Joshua 5:13-14; 1Chron.21:16
  3. There is a king of order among the angels. We have angels and archangels.
  4. They carry out God’s instruction with precision. In one night an Angel of the Lord put to death 185,000 people. See 2Kings 19:35. Angels move at very speed, perhaps more than the speed of light. Some angles are designated as HRRS (Heavenly Rapid Response Squad)
  5. They are sent to minister to God’s people, Psalm 91:11; Heb.1:14
  6. They have varying assignments: some are angels for messages such as Gabriel; for healing, deliverance, warfare like Michael etc…See Dan.9:20-22; Luke 1:26, Dan.10:13
  7. Some angels surround the throne of God such as the Seraphs. See Isaiah 6:1-3
  8. Interestingly, some angels are entrusted with the responsibility of watching over little children. See Matt.18:10

Later on, the term watcher was used to refer to God’s servants like Prophet Ezekiel in Ezek.33:7, and of course, people of God. Those who are ready and willing to carry on God’s instructions.

Every serious minded child of God could be called a watcher.

Attributes of a Watcher

  • Vigilant, alertness and knowledge of the environment
  • Diligent to duty
  • Selfless
  • Patience
  • Visionary
  • Accountability
  • Steadfastness

You Shall Decree a thing…Job 22:28

The decree made by the Watchers on King Nebuchadnezzar came to past. The power of the Almighty was made manifest in his life. He was thrown into the forest and lived like an animal until the time appointed was over.

God has made you a WATCHER.

As watchers over our families and cities, we have the mandate of God to make decrees. Whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever we loose will equally be loosed, Matt.18:18.

In achieving this, you must know who you are in Christ Jesus; your position and your authority in Christ. See Eph.2:6 (cf. Eph.1:21); Mark 11:23-24.

A close mouth is close destiny. Are there decrees you need to make on this retreat ground?

Do you know there is power in a spoken word? Speak out power into that situation, that your family (husband and Children), business and career, etc.
