Theme: The Crucified Life: A narrow Way to Salvation

Text: Matt. 7:13-14; Gal. 2:19-21

Introduction: The road to salvation isn’t an easy road, hence not too many are found walking on it as our text (Matt.7:13-14) reveals. It wasn’t easy for Jesus anyway! He abandoned his glory, came down from heaven to earth and died for our sins, even the death on the cross. Thus, the cross which was abnitio, an object of shame, suffering and reproach became a point of significance in our Christian faith. Through the cross we are saved, no longer under the law but grace, however, the narrowness of the way makes it that we are notat freedom to live the way we want. We are to live in total submission to the will and purpose of Christ as a response to His love for us.

Questions for Discussion

In your own words, explain what it means to live a crucified life as Paul stated in Gal.2:20. See also Romans 6:11-14; 8:9-10

In the context of Matthew 7:13-14, Why is the way to salvation said to be narrow and why are there only few found on it.

(b) With apt illustrations, Point out and discuss the distinctions between the

Narrowand Broad ways.

How can believers successfully pass through the narrow gate? Gal.5:1,  Luke 9:62; Heb.12:1,2; Matt.5:11,12; John 16:33

Discuss practical efforts required of us (both as individuals and churches) in order to bring people to the way of salvation, the narrowness notwithstanding.

Conclusion

The hymn “It’s not an easy road” written by John Peterson captures what a crucified life is all about. A life that is not self centered, but Christ centered. Yes! The road might be filled with thorns and thistles; trials and persecutions etc. But then, joy comes in the morning. It is one thing to begin to walk on the narrow way and another to walk to the end. Receive Grace to finish strong!
