DIOCESE OF ABA
(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
2023 RETREAT FOR ABA DIOCESAN LADIES
BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
TOPIC: TAKE HEED TO YOURSELF
TEXT: 1TIMOTHY 4:13-16
M.V: 1TIM. 4:16
Introduction: Paul’s letter to Timothy is one of the Pastoral letters. Both 1st and 2ndletters serve as a blue print on how a minister (child of God) ought to conduct his/her life, and of course, leadership/administration of the church of God, family and in other spheres of life. In his first letter to Timothy, Paul writes to remind him of his objective in keeping him an overseer of the Church in Ephesus, which was to squelch (quickly put to an end) the false teachings prevalent at that time, and to nurture the congregation with godly teachings. In achieving that, Paul instructs Timothy with practical advice on how to live his life, and then, the church of God committed to his charge. Amongst all, Paul advised Timothy to take heed unto himself. The self referred to in this text is not just the physical body or one’s outlook, rather the soul, your inner man, the one that would appear before God, the judge of all the earth. This was so important to Timothy as the success of his ministry hinges greatly, on the advice. The same applies to us, hence the topic of our study. Let us therefore, open our heart to the Holy Spirit for deeper insight.
DISCUSSION GUIDE
- Explain in details what it means to “take heed to yourself.
- Do you think our lifestyle has an effect on God’s word, people around us and the Church of God? If yes, how? See 2Cor.3:2-3
- With reference to the following passages, 1Peter 1:14-16; ICor.15:33; Eph.4:29-32; 2Cor. 6:14-16, how we can take heed in these areas of our lives:
- Speech,
- Dressing,
- Attitude to money, work and Business,
- Type of friend we keep,
- Our relationship with God and
- Conduct with family and neighbours.
- 4.From 1Tim.4:12-15, mention some of the instruments that would help us take heed to ourselves. See also Col.3:16; Psalm 119:10-11; Mark 1:35; 2Cor.13:5; Prov.27:17; Heb.10:25.
Conclusion: The fact that we all must stand before God, the judge of all the earth should spur us to heed to this very important advice as contained in our text. Unfortunately, a good number of people concentrate more on their physical body and facial outlook instead of their soul. Let this not be said of you! We must yield our soul completely to God by allowing the word of God to dwell in us, thereby giving the Holy Spirit the center stage in our heart. Dear Sister, take heed unto yourself!!!
