THE FIRST SERMON PREACHED AT ST. PETER’S (ANG.) CHURCH, 65-67 IMMACULATE AVENUE UMUNGASI ABA ON SUNDAY 16TH JAN., 2011 BY REVD PRINCE UCHE NWAOHARU

TOPIC: I KNOW THE PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU
TEXT: JER. 29:11(cf Psalm 139:13, 15-16).

INTRODUCTION:
It is my wish to welcome all of you to today’s service. By the grace of God, today is my first time of worshiping with you as a resident Pastor. In that case, may I formally welcome you into the year 2011, a year the LORD has designed to bless you, your family, business and individual endeavors. I declare that this year, the LORD will be your God; He will be your shield and fortress, your deliverer, strength and salvation. A thousand might fall by your side and ten thousand by your right hand, but with your eyes will you see the reward of the wicked. The LORD has given Hs angels charge over you, they will guide and guard you and no evil will before you. The sun will not hurt you by day neither the moon by night. This year, the LORD will preserve your going out and your coming in. He will prosper the works of your hand and grant you breakthroughs in all ramifications, Amen.

The topic of our sermon as selected from Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of God’s unfailing promises, it reminds us that God is our creator who knows the beginning and end of our life. He knows how many days we have to live here on earth and how each of them would look like. He employs every means needed to bring us to our destination. He might allow troubles, challenges and difficulties to come our way, but all these are intended for our good.

When the Israelites, His own chosen people sinned against Him, though He sent them into captivity, he did not abandon them completely. Even, in their difficulties God was still with them. This reminds me of one of His Promises in Gen. 28:15 “I will never leave you nor forsake you until I have fulfilled all I have spoken (written) concerning you” (emphasis mine). And David in one of the Psalms said, “The LORD will perfect all that concerns me.” God has never forsaken His own for once, and He will not forsake you either. He is always there for you when you call on him.

That God says He has a plan for you is neither an exaggeration nor an empty promise; He means what He says and says what He means. Before He makes a promise, He has already made provision(s) for it. God’s promises are unlike the ones we receive from some politicians, who make laudable promises in the course of their political campaigns and fulfill none. Mind you that God’s promises are unfailing, for He is neither a man that He should fail nor son of man that He should lie. His words are as good as His name.

Let us at this time consider some of the plans God has for His children.

GOD HAS PLANNED TO GIVE YOU LIFE

In John 10: 10, God made clear that the devil cometh not but to steal, kill and destroy. This, in a nutshell is the devil’s threefold mission-“Steal, Kill and Destroy” He is desperately making use of every available means to accomplish his mission. No wonder we hear terrible and horrific news all over the world today. Let me say without fear of contradiction that everything that happens in the physical world has got a spiritual undertone. The reason being that the Spiritual controls the physical. If that is the case, then, it implies that some religious crises, natural disasters and the likes happening within and around us have spiritual connotations. If properly traced, they are manipulated from Satanic covens in order to destroy mankind. Take for instance; in Brazil more than five hundred lives have been lost as a result of heavy rain and mudslide. What of the one that is happening in Jos, Nigeria. Indeed, horrific news abound, we can’t exhaust them here.

However, God has promised through His son, Jesus Christ to give us Life, and not just life, but life in abundance, Hallelujah. This is Good news. In the midst of our difficulties, challenges and troubles. In the midst of Satan’s antics, God has promised that He will not give our lives as a prey to the Devil. Isn’t this Good News? Look at His wonderful promises in Isaiah chapter 43:1-4. “But now, O Israel, the LORD who created you says: "Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. 2 When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt, Ethiopia, and Seba as a ransom for your freedom. 4 Others died that you might live. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you.” (NLT) God did not mince words here. He meant every bit of what he said. Why not claim these promises today, they are yours.

GOD HAS PLANNED TO GIVE YOU GOOD HEALTH

God is concerned with everything that concerns us. He is not a withdrawn God as some might think. He knows all our desires and has our comfort at heart. Isaiah 53:4a says, “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,” and in Matt.8:17 the same statement was repeated, stressing that God’s promises are sure and unfailing. Many other passages agree to the fact that God wants His children to be in good health. Even Doctors assert that while they care, God heals. God is the ultimate healer; He is even here today to heal you. He has all laboratory equipment to diagnose you. While not surrender at His feet now for your healing? If a doctor could handle you well, God can do far better. But you MUST have faith, for without faith no man can please God. He is Jehovah rapha- the Lord your healer.

To be continued next Sunday. God bless you!
